153rd Street North St. Pete Courtyards

153rd Street North is a north St. Petersburg block of mid-century houses, a few rebuilds, and courtyards that were poured tight to the lanai. Summer rain ponds against the slab when the old concrete has settled.

A courtyard here is not a show field. It is the outdoor room between the house, the screen, and the side fence. PaverForge Hardscapes builds it so water leaves and the first course does not walk into the neighbor yard.

How we build it

• Excavate to a depth that leaves compacted aggregate, not a couple of inches of sand

• Pitch away from the house and the lanai toward a legal outfall

• Hold the edge off the property line so a later fence repair does not tear the field

• Keep a hose path and a gate swing clear of the finished grade
