178th Street North walkways cross a sandy front yard between the sidewalk and a low porch. If the path is flat, water sits at the stoop. If the edge is loose, the bed swallows the border after one wet season.

A path that sheds

We pitch the walk away from the porch and lock the edge so it does not walk into the mulch. Steps get a landing that matches the door swing. Irrigation sleeves go in before the base, not after the field is locked.

Roots and shoulders

Oak roots get a thicker base or a jog in the path. We do not shave a root and pretend the paver will stay.
