194th Street North St. Pete Aprons
194th Street North sits on the numbered-street grid of north Pinellas, where short coastal lots meet a soft sand subgrade and a shallow seasonal water table. A driveway apron that looks level the week it is laid will dish at the street joint if the base is only a sand bed.
What the apron has to do
The apron is the transition from the private drive to the public approach. We measure the existing gutter or asphalt edge, the garage threshold, and the low spot after a rain before we excavate. The field has to fall away from the slab and still meet the street without a lip that catches a tire or a scooter.
Excavate to a depth that leaves compacted aggregate, not a skim of screenings over native sand
Pitch away from the house and toward a legal outfall, not a neighbor side yard
Lock the first course with a rigid edge so it does not walk into the street
Match the city approach so the joint does not become a pond after a gulf storm
Salt air and color
North-county lots still take salt air and hard sun. We specify through-body concrete pavers, not a painted face, and we talk sealing only after the field has settled and the joints are locked. A sealer on a damp apron just traps the problem.
