19th Street NE Old Northeast walkways
19th Street NE walkways drop from the house grade to the seawall steps. The path is short, shaded, and the place everyone carries chairs, a cooler, and the pool hose. A single sloping run without a landing is where people slip when the pavers are wet.
Landings, not a ramp that pretends to be flat
We break the grade into a landing at the house and a landing at the bulkhead steps, with the walking field pitched just enough to shed water. A path that is truly flat holds water. A path that is too steep sheds water into the seawall toe and scours the joint at the bottom step.
Land the path on a flush collar at the seawall step, not on loose shell
Keep hose-bib rings out of the walking line
Edge both sides so shell and mulch do not migrate into the joints
Isolate any dock electrical pedestal so the path can be reset without the pedestal
Wet-season use
Old Northeast afternoons leave the walk damp under the oaks. Texture matters more than a dark color that holds heat at the house and stays slick at the water. We compact the base in lifts so the bottom landing does not settle below the step and become a trip edge.
