277th Street North Ozona Walkways
277th Street North is the Ozona side of this numbered run: older houses, deeper shade, and walks that do double duty as the mail path and the service path. The failure mode is not traffic. It is a slick surface under an oak that drips from May to October.
Texture over color
A smooth porcelain look-alike is the wrong product here. We use a concrete paver with a real texture, a joint that can be rinsed, and a color that does not show every leaf stain as a defect. Light colors glare less in shade but they show tannin. We talk through that before the sample leaves the truck.
Landings at old steps
Ozona steps were poured to whatever the carpenter had that week. The walk lands on a level paver pad at least as wide as the door, then the run finds its own grade. We do not feather a single paver up to a rotten stringer and call it a landing.
Where the walk passes a downspout, we add a splash collar or a short channel so roof water does not mine the bedding sand. That is the same idea we use on seawall splash collars, scaled to a cottage eave.
Keeping the path maintainable
Shade walks need a rinse, not a sealer schedule. We leave the joint open enough to refresh and we keep the edge visible so a homeowner can see when the base has dropped. A buried edge in mulch is how these paths disappear.
