A walkway is a drainage job

The step at the porch is the high point that matters. If the path falls the wrong way, rain sits on the riser and works under the threshold. A pretty bond pattern does not fix that. The base and the pitch do.

• Positive fall away from the porch, even on a short run

• Compacted base under foot traffic, not a sand smear over roots

• Edge restraint where the path meets lawn or shell

• Joint sand that locks after compaction, then a hold on early washing
