40th Street NE Old Northeast Walkways
40th Street NE front walks run from a sidewalk that may already be lifted to a porch that was poured decades ago. The path in between is often a ribbon of cracked concrete or loose pavers, shaded all day, and wet longer than a south-facing driveway.
Walk width and the porch landing
We set the walk wide enough for two people and a delivery, then step the landing so the porch threshold is not a surprise lip. Roots that are already in the path get a cut-back and a base that can be opened later without tearing the whole run. Pitch leaves the porch and does not dump onto the public sidewalk in a sheet.
Shade keeps the field damp. We do not seal a walk the week it is laid. Joints lock first. Color is through-body, because a face-coated paver chalks under the oak canopy and the salt air that still reaches this far inland on a sea breeze.
