What the apron has to do

The apron is the piece cars hit twice a day. It has to meet the street without a lip that scrapes, and it has to pitch water to the gutter instead of back toward the garage. Crystal Beach lots often sit on packed sand over shell. A thin bedding layer looks fine the week it is laid and dishes at the tire tracks after the first wet season.

We size the compacted aggregate base for turning loads, not for a patio. Edge restraint goes in before the field is locked, so the border does not creep toward the roadway. Joint sand is compacted in, not broadcast and left to the next storm.

Salt, irrigation, and the street tie-in

Salt film and irrigation overspray are the two things that stain a new apron here. We keep the field off the irrigation heads and pitch the last course so rinse water leaves the stones. The street tie-in is walked before we lock a number: some Crystal Beach aprons meet asphalt, some meet a concrete county apron, and the joint between them is where the last crew usually failed.
