We keep the field wide enough for a cart, not a second driveway. Door-to-street pitch is set so stormwater does not sit at the step. Where a root is the structure, we bridge it instead of cutting it.

A sailor edge can be lifted later if the oak moves. We do not grout the field solid. Joint sand that locks after compaction is the joint, not a mortar line that cracks when the tree drinks.
