A walk is not a driveway leftover

The path from the door to the street has to stay even for a cart and a guest, and it has to shed water. A sand-set ribbon over roots heaves by the second wet season. We bridge or shave roots only where the arborist and the owner agree, then compact a real base in the remaining section.

Width stays inside the private lot. We do not pave the county shoulder to make the walk look wider. Edge restraint keeps the first course from walking into the grass.

Pitch and joints

Cross-pitch sends water to the yard, not across the walk into the garage. Joint sand is locked after compaction. Where a downspout dumps on the walk, we move the splash or add a small collar so the joints do not wash out.
