73rd Street North St. Pete Walkways
73rd Street North walks in St. Petersburg are short, shaded, and often pinched between a fence and the house. The original concrete has usually cracked at the oak, and the gate no longer clears the heaved slab.
A walk that still works
We lay out the path from the public sidewalk to the side door, then check the gate swing and the hose bib. A walk set too high traps the gate. A walk set too low becomes the swale. Compacted aggregate, a restrained edge, and a joint that can be re-sanded after the first season are the difference between a path and a future trip edge.
Where a root is the problem, we do not pave over it and hope. The field is stepped or the border is cut so a later root prune does not wreck the whole run. 60mm pedestrian pavers with a through-body color hold up better in this shade than a painted face.
