9th Street NE Old Northeast Walkways

9th Street NE is a quiet Old Northeast block of bungalows and later additions, with narrow front walks from the sidewalk to the porch. Many of those walks were poured thin or laid on sand, and they now rock at the step.

A walk that matches the porch

We set the walk width to the actual traffic, not a catalog module. A single-file path is fine for a side entry. A front walk that hosts guests needs a landing at the step wide enough for the door swing and a package drop. The city sidewalk stays as it is unless the apron of the walk has dropped below it.

  • Excavate to a compacted aggregate base that does not pump in a wet week

  • Hold the walk below the porch slab so water does not sheet inside

  • Lock the edges so the first course cannot kick into the lawn

  • Keep a joint that can be reset if a root lifts one panel later

Shade and color

Oak shade keeps a walk damp longer than a beach lot. We specify a joint sand that does not wash on the first storm, and we do not seal a walk that is still holding moisture. A light through-body color shows less mildew contrast than a dark painted face.
