Bayou Highlands Neighborhood Driveways in Southeast St. Petersburg
Bayou Highlands is a residential neighborhood in southeast St. Petersburg. Yards sit low, and a hard rain or a high tide can leave the swale full for a day. A driveway that looks dry at noon can be pumping by evening.
Base that can drain
On a low lot we do not trap water between a plastic sheet and a dense cap. The section is excavated, soft organic pockets are undercut, and the aggregate is compacted in lifts so the field has somewhere to shed water other than the joints.
Set the finish grade above the typical swale line when the lot allows it.
Keep a gap at the house slab so the field is not bonded to the foundation.
Route downspouts past the field instead of dumping them on the first course.
Plan the apron so the city approach is not the low point of the drive.
After a storm
Joint sand will wash on the first king tide if the edge is open. We pin corners, lock the restraint, and wait for a dry window before polymeric sand. A haze on a wet field is harder to remove than waiting a day.
