Building a Side-Yard Hose-Reel Pad with a Trapped Drain
A hose reel on bare sand next to a new paver walk becomes a mud hole by August. PaverForge Hardscapes builds a small pitched pad with a trapped drain so rinse water leaves the joints.
Pad, pitch, and trap
The pad is a compact paver or stone square sized for the reel and a utility cart. It pitches to a drain with a trap so sewer gas and insects stay out. The drain ties to an approved yard drain or pop-up, not to the pool skimmer and not onto a neighbor's lot.
The pad is isolated from the main walk with a restraint joint. Bedding sand does not run under the drain body. A soldier course hides the cut edge.
Where it belongs
Side yards in St. Pete Beach cottages, Treasure Island lots, and Largo villas are the usual spots. We keep the pad off the AC condenser clearance and off any irrigation backflow.

FAQ
Can the drain share a downspout line? Only if the line is sized for both and has a cleanout. Will polymeric sand clog the drain? We keep sand off the grate and set the grate flush so a broom does not push sand in.
