Flush Seawall Boarding-Gate Latch Plates
A boarding gate on a Pinellas seawall or dock landing looks like hardware. The latch and the hinge are what rack the cap. Owners bolt the strike plate straight into the seawall coping, then wonder why the gate sags after a season of salt and a few hard landings.
What the latch is doing to the cap
A gate that closes on a proud steel plate becomes a trip edge on the walk. A latch screwed into thin coping concrete spalls the face, lets water into the bolt holes, and eventually lets the gate drag. Surge and boat wake work the hinge every day, not just in a storm.
How a flush plate is set
We recess a latch plate so the finished surface is flush with the cap or the landing pavers, isolate the fasteners from the coping concrete, and leave the plate removable for the next hinge adjustment. The walk stays a walk. The gate still closes. We do not core the cap blind, and we do not bury the strike where the next owner cannot reach it.
This is a hardscape detail on a seawall or dock landing, not a marine-structure repair. If the cap itself is cracked or the sheet pile is moving, that is a different trade.
