Flush Seawall Boat-Chock Base Plates | PaverForge
A boat chock on a seawall cap needs a flat plate under it. Set loose on a sloped or pitted cap, the chock rocks, the keel point punches the concrete, and the plate becomes a toe catch on the dock walk. PaverForge sets a flush hardscape plate in the cap walk so the chock has a bearing surface and bare feet do not catch an edge. We are not the seawall engineer and we do not redesign the wall.
What the plate is doing
The plate spreads the chock load across a small, level pad and gives the dock hardware a known surface. It sits flush with the cap so the walk stays usable when the boat is gone. Salt, UV, and splash are the environment, so the plate and the joint around it have to tolerate wet-dry cycles instead of a painted interior detail.
If the cap is already spalled at the chock point, a plate on top of failed concrete does not fix the cap. We flag that on the walk-through and coordinate the plate with whoever is repairing the concrete. Hardware layout stays with the dock contractor.
How we set a flush chock plate
Cap walk checked for slope, spall, and the existing chock location
Plate recessed so the top is flush with the walking surface
Joint detailed so it does not become a water trap against the cap
Clear of railing posts, cleats, and ladder sockets already on the wall
Hardware pattern left to the dock contractor, not guessed in the field
Questions we get
Does a chock plate replace a seawall repair? No. It is a hardscape bearing pad. Spalled concrete, tie-rods, and wall movement are a seawall question. Can the plate sit proud? We do not leave it proud on a walking cap. A raised plate is a trip edge on a wet dock. Will it fit next to a cleat? Only if the cleat base and the railing posts are already mapped. We lay the plate out before we cut.
How to start
Call PaverForge Hardscapes at 727-490-9798. Photos of the cap, the chock, and the nearest cleat or ladder are enough to start. We walk seawall caps from St. Pete Beach through the Pinellas barrier islands and the bayou lots. Related hardscape notes are on paverforge.com/services.
