Flush Seawall Bulkhead Splice Inspection Plates
Canal lots from Snell Isle to the beaches often have a seawall cap that buried the bulkhead splice. When a bolt line or weld needs a look, the usual move is a saw cut through the cap. A flush inspection plate, set when the cap or the upland pavers are rebuilt, gives a removable window over that splice.
What the plate is for
The plate is a framed opening in the cap or in the paver field just landward of the cap, sized to the splice, not to a whole panel. It sits flush so a hose, a cart, or a bare foot does not catch it. The frame is isolated from the walking surface so cap movement does not crack the surrounding pavers. It is an access detail, not a structural repair of the wall itself.
Opening located on the splice, confirmed before the cap is closed
Flush frame with a seated plate, not a raised lid
Weep or drain so the recess does not hold salt water
Surrounding pavers restrained so the plate can come out later
If the wall needs engineering, that is a separate scope. PaverForge builds the hardscape access around the splice on Pinellas canal lots. Call 727-490-9798 or see https://www.paverforge.com/services.
Common questions
Do these plates replace a seawall repair? No. They only keep an inspection opening available so the splice can be looked at without cutting the cap each time.
Can the plate sit in a paver deck? Yes, if the frame is isolated and the field is restrained. The plate has to come out without pulling the surrounding courses.
