Flush Seawall Gangway Hinge Plates

Canal homes from St. Pete Beach to Shore Acres often run a short aluminum or timber gangway from the seawall cap down to a floating dock. The hinge sits on the cap. If that plate is just lag-bolted into a thin, uneven concrete cap, the pin wallows, the gangway twists at low tide, and the cap spalls around the bolts.

What the hinge plate is for

A hinge plate is a small reinforced concrete pad, set flush or just proud of the cap, with sleeves or a bolt pattern that matches the gangway hinge. It spreads the load off the thin cap edge and gives the hinge a flat plane so the ramp can rise and fall with the tide without binding. It is a hardscape landing, not a seawall rebuild.

How we set it

We mark the hinge centerline, cut a recess in the cap or the land-side walk, and pour a plate that matches the existing elevation so the gangway does not create a trip edge on the patio. Sleeves are set before the pour. We leave the dock hardware and any pile work to the marine contractor, and we coordinate the bolt pattern before we form the plate.

Where this shows up

The same detail fits finger-pier landings, davit approaches, and the short ramps behind seawall caps in Snell Isle, Old Northeast, and the beach towns. Call PaverForge Hardscapes at 727-490-9798 with a photo of the hinge and the cap. We will say if the plate is a hardscape job or if the cap itself needs a marine contractor first.
