Setting a Dock Ladder and Seawall Stair Landing on a Pinellas Canal Lot
Canal lots in Pinellas often need a short landing where a dock ladder or seawall stair meets the yard. If that landing is tied into the wall, the wall moves and the pavers crack. If it pitches toward the cap, king-tide splash sits in the joints.
Isolation and pitch
We set the landing on its own compacted base, with a bond break at the seawall or bulkhead so the wall can move without tearing the field. Pitch runs inland to a swale or a drain, not onto the cap. The first course is a pinned soldier border so foot traffic does not kick units into the gap.
Ladder feet and stair stringers land on a thickened pad, not on bedding sand. We leave a service gap at the cap that can take a backer rod instead of polymeric sand, which washes out on the first tide.
Salt and the edge
Salt air eats light-gauge edging. We use a restraint that can take the splash zone, and we specify through-body color units so a scuff does not show gray concrete.
