Re-compacting a Washed-Out Driveway Throat After a Pinellas Summer Cloudburst

A Pinellas summer cell can drop an inch of rain in twenty minutes. If the driveway throat pitches toward the street and the first joints are already open, bedding sand walks out with the water. The first soldier course then rocks, and the next storm takes more. Dumping polymeric sand on a hollow course does not fix it.

The repair is a lift

We lift the washed courses, check the base, add crushed concrete where the storm scoured a channel, compact in lifts, reset the border, and only then sand the joints. If the plastic edge pulled, we re-pin or switch to a stiffer restraint before the field goes back down.

  • Do not drive the rocking courses while they are loose

  • Photograph the wash path so we can see whether a downspout is the real source

  • Expect a one- to two-day window so the new joint sand can lock before the next cell

  • Ask about a small overflow strip if the lot has no other place for roof water

Prevention after the reset

We look at gutter discharge, the city apron hinge, and whether the first course is thinner than the field. Those three details cause most repeat washouts. Call 727-490-9798 after the water drops and the joints are still open.
