27th Avenue North St. Pete Walkways
27th Avenue North sits in the older north St. Petersburg grid, west of 4th Street and short of the Snell Isle canals. Live oaks reach over the sidewalk, irrigation heads overspray the joints, and a walk that was set on a couple of inches of sand will rock after one wet August.
What we measure before we cut
We start at the front door threshold and the city sidewalk, not at the pretty picture. The path has to clear the oak drip line, the meter, and the irrigation valve box without trapping water against the slab. If a root is already under the field, we either bridge it with a thicker base and a flexible edge or we reroute the walk so the tree can stay.
Excavate to a compacted aggregate base, not a sand-only bed over native soil
Pitch the walk to the lawn or a legal outfall, never back at the stucco
Rigid edge restraint so the first course does not walk into the planting bed
Joint sand locked after the field is clean and dry, not sealed over mud
Shade, stain, and the first summer
North-side shade keeps pavers cooler, but oak tannin and fertilizer overspray still mark a light color. We specify a through-body concrete paver and we talk sealing only after the joints have settled. A seal on a dirty walk just traps the stain.
