55th Avenue South St. Pete Courtyard Pavers

Courtyards on 55th Avenue South sit between a 1950s house, a screen enclosure, and live oaks that drop leaves into every joint. The pavers look fine in January. By August the shade has kept the bedding sand damp, the roots have heaved one corner, and the polymeric sand has washed toward the side gate.

What the court has to do

These courts are the outdoor room, not a show pad. They take a grill, a bin path, and the only route from the kitchen door to the cage. We keep that path level enough to walk with a tray and pitched enough that a summer storm does not stand against the slab.

How we rebuild under the oaks

We lift the failed field, cut roots that are already under the bedding, and lay geotextile before a new compacted stone base. A concrete paver with a tight joint takes the shade better than a wide-joint natural stone. Edge restraint is pinned, not just spiked into soft sand. Where a root will return, we leave a removable border course so the next heave is a repair, not a teardown.

Drainage we do not skip

Downspouts on these houses often dump at the court edge. We tie them to a pop-up or a side-yard swale before we sand the joints. A court that looks flat and drains toward the house will stain the stem wall no matter how good the paver is.

Courtyard FAQ

Will oak shade keep the pavers wet? Shade slows drying. The fix is pitch and a base that does not hold water, not a darker color. We do not promise a court that never shows a leaf stain.

Can the screen enclosure stay up? Usually yes. We work up to the kick plate and reset only the courses the cage beam sits on, so the enclosure does not have to come down for a courtyard repair.

Flush Seawall Flag-Staff Socket Plates

A flush flag-staff socket plate sets a removable courtesy-flag socket in the seawall cap or dock-edge pavers so the opening is not a toe catch when the staff is out.
