Jungle Terrace Driveways in West-Central St. Petersburg

Jungle Terrace sits west of 16th Street and south of the Jungle Prada waterfront. What the lot actually does to the driveway

Many Jungle Terrace lots pitch toward the street and then flatten at the sidewalk. That is fine for a slab that already has a built-in crown. It is not fine for a paver field that was laid dead-flat. We shoot elevations from the garage threshold to the city apron and pick a crown or a one-way pitch before the first lift of base goes down. The goal is water off the house and off the neighbor, not a puddle at the mailbox.

Mature oaks are the other constraint. Roots heave old concrete and will heave a thin paver section just as fast. We undercut around major roots where the city and the arborist allow it, drop a geotextile, and thicken the crushed-concrete base instead of fighting the tree with a saw. Root barriers go in only where the owner wants them and the trunk is far enough from the field that a barrier will not girdle the tree.

Side-load and compact-lot geometry

• Turn radii at the sidewalk so a mid-size SUV can enter without climbing the neighbor's sod.

• A darker soldier-course border that hides tire scuffs on the inside of the turn.

• A flush irrigation box and hose bib so the field can be washed without a trip edge.

• Staging on the street with access mats so the live-oak drip line is not used as a dump pad.

Permits and the city apron

The private field stops at the right-of-way. Jungle Terrace aprons and sidewalks stay on the city's spec. We photograph the existing apron, match the elevation, and do not overlay city concrete with pavers unless the owner has written approval.
