Paver Driveways in St. Pete Beach: Base Depth, Slope, and Salt Air
A paver driveway on St. Pete Beach fails from the ground up. Barrier-island lots combine loose sand, short hard rain, and a water table that will find any thin spot in the base. PaverForge Hardscapes builds driveways so the surface stays locked after the first wet season — not just on install day.

Why beach-area driveways are different
Mainland Tampa lots often sit on firmer fill. St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island lots sit on sand. If the excavation is too shallow or the lifts are not compacted, tire tracks become dips within a season. Afternoon storms then wash fines out of the joints and the edge starts to creep.
We also watch salt and heat. Dark pavers look sharp in a catalog and cook in August. Lighter, denser concrete pavers and a sealed joint hold color longer near the Gulf and near pool splash.
How we build the base
Confirm layout, apron, and how water leaves the lot.
Excavate to a depth that matches vehicle load, not patio depth.
Place aggregate in lifts and compact each lift.
Set a consistent pitch away from the house and garage.
Lay the field, cut borders, and lock the perimeter with edge restraint.
Compact the surface and fill joints with polymeric sand where the design calls for it.
Edge restraint is not optional on a coastal driveway. Without it, the first row walks outward and the field opens. We use restraints that stand up to moisture instead of raw steel that rusts in salt air.
Materials that belong on a Gulf driveway
We install interlocking concrete pavers for most driveways because they handle load, can be lifted later, and come in colors that stay cooler. Natural stone driveways are possible on some lots, but they need a different joint and a harder conversation about maintenance. We will tell you on site if a stone you like is a poor match for vehicle traffic.
Driveway vs patio cost drivers
A two-car driveway in south Pinellas often lands in a planning range of $8,000 to $18,000 and up. Demolition of an existing slab, extra base depth, tight side-yard access off Gulf Boulevard, and custom borders move the number. Treat that as a planning range, not a bid. We measure before we price.
If your current paver driveway has already settled, a full tear-out is not always required. See our re-leveling guide when the stones themselves are still sound.
Permits and the apron
Homeowners should confirm driveway apron and right-of-way rules with the City of St. Pete Beach before work starts. We do not invent permit fees. If the city requires a specific approach at the sidewalk or curb, that gets designed into the layout instead of patched later.
