Retaining Walls in St. Pete Beach: Drainage First, Then Stone
A retaining wall on St. Pete Beach is a drainage project that happens to have a stone face. If water sits behind the wall, the face will lean, stain, or blow out no matter how expensive the veneer looks on install day. PaverForge Hardscapes builds walls so water leaves the back of the structure.
What we build
Grade-change walls on sloped beach lots
Seat walls that frame a patio
Planter walls and raised beds
Walls that support an outdoor kitchen or fireplace
Stone veneer faces over a proper structural core
How a wall should drain
Behind the face we use free-draining gravel and a perforated drain at the base that daylight or ties into a system that actually goes somewhere. Compacted native sand packed tight against a solid face is how walls fail here. Afternoon storms will prove that in one season.
We also watch the high water table on barrier-island lots. A wall that looks tall from the patio side may have very little dry soil behind it. That changes footing depth, geogrid decisions, and whether a wall is even the right answer versus a sloped grade and planting.
Materials for salt air
Concrete block cores with manufactured stone or natural stone veneer are common. Solid interlocking wall units work when the height and surcharge allow them. Metal that rusts in salt spray does not belong where you will see it every day. We pick fasteners and edge details that survive Gulf air.
When a wall is the wrong product
Not every grade change needs a wall. On some St. Pete Beach and Tierra Verde lots, a sloped planting bed with the right soil and edge is cheaper and more stable. We will say so. A wall quoted only to win the job is how you get a callback in year two.
Pairing walls with pavers
Most of our walls sit next to a patio, walkway, or driveway. The wall and the paver field have to share a drainage plan. Water should not dump off the patio into the back of the wall, and the wall drain should not saturate the paver base. We lay those elevations out before excavation.
