Snell Isle Waterfront Driveways and Courtyards in St. Petersburg
Snell Isle is one of the few St. Petersburg neighborhoods where the driveway is part of the waterfront presentation. Lots sit on older bay fill, live oaks crowd the parkway, and many approaches pass a gate or a circular court before they reach the garage. A patio leftover stone on a thin sand bed does not last on that ground.
What the bay-fill section is actually doing
Fill along Coffee Pot Bayou and the isle canals is mixed sand and shell with a high water table after summer rain. We proof-roll the subgrade, place geotextile where the fill pumps, and compact a crushed-stone base in lifts instead of dumping one thick uncompacted layer. Eighty-millimeter pavers belong on the drive. Sixty-millimeter belongs on the courtyard only if cars never cross it.
Oaks, irrigation, and the parkway strip
Mature oaks on Snell Isle heave a poorly built field in three to five seasons. We keep the paver section off the major flare, sleeve irrigation laterals before the base goes down, and leave a clean mow strip so the parkway turf does not wick into the joints. Gate posts and operator pads get their own footings, isolated from the rolling field.
