60mm vs 80mm Pavers for Pinellas Driveways
Homeowners pick pavers from a photo. The photo rarely says how thick the stone is. On a Pinellas driveway that difference matters. 60mm (about 2-3/8 inches) is a patio and walk thickness. 80mm (about 3-1/8 inches) is what we want under passenger cars on a lot that already wants to move.
What thickness actually does
Thicker stone spreads the tire load over more of the base. It also gives you a bigger interlocking mass once the joints are locked. On beach fill, oak lots, and any driveway that sees a work truck, 60mm will telegraph every soft spot. You will see tire dish, edge roll, and joints that open after the first wet season.
When 60mm is still honest
Walks, patios, and lanai floors that never see a vehicle.
A small courtyard with no parking and a compacted base.
A pool deck where porcelain or a patio paver is the specified system.
When we specify 80mm
Any driveway, apron, or parking bay.
RV, boat, and extra-parking pads.
HOA and small-commercial fields that take service vehicles.
Thickness does not replace base. An 80mm stone on dumped sand will still fail. We compact aggregate in lifts, set a restraint, and use 80mm where cars live. Call PaverForge Hardscapes at 727-490-9798 if you want that call made on your lot instead of from a catalog.
