Belgian Block and Curb-Style Edges on Pinellas Driveways

Most failed Pinellas driveways did not fail in the middle first. The edge walked, the joint opened, and the field unraveled from the street inward. Plastic strip restraint is fine on a quiet mainland walk. On a beach driveway that takes storm flow and delivery trucks, we want mass at the edge.

What we use instead of a thin strip

  • Belgian block or similar unit curb set on a compacted footing

  • A soldier course tied into the field, not floating outside it

  • Poured concrete curb only where the city or HOA already requires it

  • A clean joint between the private field and the city apron

Salt and movement

Coastal lots move. An edge that cannot take a little movement will crack or rotate. We bed the block, compact behind it, and keep the first paver course locked to that mass. If an existing field is walking at the street, rebuilding the edge is often cheaper than lifting the whole driveway.

This is not a decoration package. The block is structure. Color comes after the edge is doing its job.
