Building a Paver Field Around a Mature Sabal-Palm Cluster
Sabal palms are the default tree on older Pinellas lots. They look like they have no roots until you cut a patio around the cluster and find a plate of fibrous roots sitting in the top foot of sand, plus an irrigation ring that has been leaking for a decade.
PaverForge Hardscapes builds fields around those clusters instead of asking the owner to remove healthy palms for a clean rectangle.
The cut, the ring, and the pitch
We hand-excavate at the trunk flare. We do not nick the main plate just to get one more row of stone. A tree-ring or planter pocket is formed with pinned restraint so the field has an edge that can be maintained, and the irrigation drip stays inside the pocket instead of soaking the bedding sand.
The finished pavers pitch away from the trunks. Water that sits against a sabal boot grows fungus and keeps the bedding wet. A two-percent fall to a side yard or a channel drain is part of the layout, not an afterthought after the first storm.
What we will not do
We will not bury the flare under bedding sand and hope the palm lives. We will not run a plate compactor over the root plate. If a palm is already declined we say so before we set stone around it.
