Building a Permeable Overflow Strip Beside a Solid Pinellas Driveway
Plenty of Pinellas driveways are a solid interlocking field with nowhere for roof and slab water to go except the street. HOAs and tight side yards often block a turf swale. A one- or two-paver permeable overflow strip along the low edge can take that water without turning the whole drive into an open-graded parking lot.
How the strip is built
The travel lanes stay dense-graded crushed concrete and polymeric joints. The overflow strip uses an open-graded reservoir, geotextile where the soils need it, and an open joint stone instead of polymeric sand. We isolate the two sections so bedding sand does not migrate into the reservoir.
Keep 80mm units in the wheel path
Use the same face color in the strip so the field does not read as a patch
Pitch the solid field toward the strip, not toward the garage
Tie roof leaders and A/C condensate into the strip only when the reservoir can take the extra volume
Permits and neighbors
A strip is still a drainage change. We photograph the existing pitch and keep water on your lot or to the legal point of discharge. It is not a substitute for a French drain when the water table is already at grade. Call 727-490-9798 to walk the low edge before the next king-tide week.
