Building a Rain-Barrel Overflow Splash Pad in Pinellas
A rain barrel on a Pinellas downspout fills in one storm. The overflow is the part that damages the house. It scours bedding sand, stains the first course, and keeps the soil at the footing wet.
PaverForge Hardscapes builds overflow splash pads and short paver leads away from the wall. Call 727-490-9798 or book at paverforge.com/book-online. We do not plumb the barrel. We build the surface the overflow lands on and the path that carries the surge to grade.
Where the water has to go
Overflow should leave the foundation and should not dump on a neighbor's lot or into a pool equipment pad. A splash pad at the barrel takes the first hit. A short paver lead or a pop-up emitter takes the rest to a lawn or a swale that already works. We do not tie a barrel into a sanitary cleanout.
Pad detail
The pad is a small field on compacted base, with a pinned edge so the barrel stand does not walk. Pitch is away from the stucco. If the weep screed is already close to grade, we do not raise the pavers into it. A gap at the wall lets the stucco dry.
Joint sand on the splash pad is the first thing a surge will lift. We compact the field, keep irrigation off it while the joints cure, and expect a re-sand after the first hard storm if the lead is undersized. Telling you that up front is part of the job.
Retrofit on an existing walk
If the walk already runs at the house, we lift a lane, correct the pitch, and reset. A polymer pour over a back-pitched walk does not fix the barrel. Photos of the downspout, the barrel, and the stained pavers scope it.
That is a small job with a clear edge. It is also the job that keeps a new patio from failing at the first course.
