Color-Through vs Surface-Coated Pavers in Coastal Pinellas

Some pavers carry color through the body of the unit. Others rely on a surface coat, slurry, or paint-like finish for the show color. On a Pinellas coast lot those two products do not age the same. Tire scuffs, salt air, furniture feet, and a yearly soft wash all sand the top. If the color is only on the skin, the field starts to look patched within a few seasons.

Where color-through earns its keep

Driveways, pool decks, and any walk that takes chairs or coolers should be a through-color concrete paver that meets ASTM C936. When a chip happens, the face under the chip still reads as the same family. We still blend pallets because even color-through lots vary by kiln load, but we are not hiding a beige core under a chocolate skin.

  • Ask the supplier whether the color is integral or a topical coat.

  • Save a small attic stock of the same lot for future utility cuts.

  • Do not assume a glossy sample board is the five-year driveway.

  • On pool decks, pick texture and chamfer for wet feet, not just the show color.

When a coated look is still on the table

A courtyard that never sees tires and gets a gentle clean can wear a more decorative finish if the client accepts recoating later. We put that in writing so nobody is surprised. Most Pinellas driveways should stay color-through. PaverForge will specify the unit before the first pallet lands. Call 727-490-9798 to walk samples on site.
