Driveway Drainage Swales Across Pinellas Front Yards
A lot of Pinellas front yards drain across the driveway to reach the street. If the paver field is built dead flat, that yard water ponds on the low side, creeps under the garage door, or blows joint sand out after every storm. The fix is not always a catch basin. Sometimes it is a shallow swale or a defined cross-channel built into the paver layout.
How we build the crossing
We shoot the yard high points and the gutter invert first. Then we either dish a gentle swale through the field with extra cut units, or we set a heel-proof slot drain where the volume is too high for a dish. The base under that line still gets compacted. A swale that is only shaped in the bedding sand will flatten the first time a truck parks on it.
Keep garage thresholds higher than the swale invert.
Do not aim roof downspouts at the center of the drive unless the channel is sized for them.
Re-pin edge restraint where the swale meets the sod so the shoulder does not slump.
After storms, check that the low line still sheds instead of holding a puddle.
When a basin is the better tool
If the lot falls toward the house or a neighbor, a mid-field basin and a piped outfall beat a deeper dish that cars slam into. We will say so on the quote instead of sculpting a hazard.
