Geogrid and Soil Stabilization Under Pinellas Paver Driveways
South Pinellas is sand, fill, and a water table that sits closer to the surface than most owners think. A pretty paver on a thin crushed-concrete bed will look fine in March and dish in September. On the softest lots PaverForge Hardscapes adds geogrid to the base section so the load spreads instead of punching a rut in the same two tire paths.
When geogrid is the honest call
The lot is known fill, especially near a canal, a harbor, or a regraded beach street.
A previous driveway already rutted even though the stone itself was fine.
The water table is high enough that the subgrade pumps when you compact it.
The driveway will take a heavy vehicle: diesel truck, boat trailer, or a regular delivery van.
What geogrid does not replace
Grid is not a license to skip depth or compaction. We still excavate, still compact in lifts, still set a real edge, and still pitch the field. The grid keeps those lifts from shearing on a soft subgrade. If a quote offers geogrid and a two-inch base, that is marketing, not engineering.
How it shows up in the quote
You will see the grid as a line item on the lots that need it. We do not add it to every St. Pete Beach patio walk. We do add it when a driveway sits on fill that has already proved it will move. That is cheaper than coming back in two years to rebuild the ruts.
Ask us on the walk-through
If your current driveway has the same two valleys after every storm, say so when you call 727-490-9798. We will probe the subgrade and tell you whether geogrid belongs in the section or whether a standard compacted base is enough.
