Geogrid Reinforcement Behind Small Pinellas Block Walls
A two- or three-course seat wall on sugar sand is still a retaining wall. Without grid and drainage, storm-season saturation lets the first course walk and the cap opens. Replacing a failed timber sleeper with block without grid repeats the failure in masonry.
Grid, drain, and first course
We set the first course on a compacted haunch, not on dirt. Drain pipe and washed rock go behind the wall before backfill. Geogrid is rolled into compacted lifts at the courses the block maker specifies, even on short walls, because Pinellas sand does not lock like clay.
The paver patio that meets the wall gets a soldier course and a gap so the field is not used as the wall’s deadman. Irrigation lines are sleeved through the wall during layout, not chased later with a saw.
