Open-Graded vs Dense-Graded Base Under Pinellas Pavers
The base under a Pinellas paver field is the job. Color is not. Two aggregate profiles show up in quotes: dense-graded stone that locks when it is compacted, and open-graded stone that leaves voids so water can move. Using the wrong one for the lot is how a driveway looks finished in May and pumps sand by September.
PaverForge Hardscapes picks the profile on site, not from a catalog page. Call 727-490-9798 or book a walkthrough at paverforge.com/book-online.
Dense-graded base on most Pinellas drives
Most St. Pete Beach, Gulfport, and mainland Pinellas driveways get a dense-graded aggregate compacted in lifts. It is the right call when the field needs stiffness under cars and the water has a pitch, a drain, or a street to go to. We do not dump a single thick lift and hope the plate compactor reaches the bottom.
Open-graded base when the water has to move through
Open-graded stone belongs under permeable fields, PICP, and some pool-adjacent or low lots where the design is to store and pass water instead of shedding it across the surface. It is not a shortcut for a wet hole. If groundwater is in the excavation, we dewater and change elevation. We will not drop open stone into standing water and call it drainage.
If you are comparing quotes, ask which profile they are using and where the water goes after it leaves the joint. Those two answers matter more than the paver name on the sample board. Call 727-490-9798 to walk the lot before anyone orders stone.
