Outdoor Fireplace Hearth Extension Isolation Joints
An isolation joint and hearth extension where an outdoor fireplace meets a Pinellas paver patio, so heat and movement do not crack the field.
The fireplace and the patio move differently
An outdoor fireplace is a masonry mass on its own footing. The paver patio is a sand-set field on compacted base. If the two are locked together, the first cool night after a fire opens a crack at the hearth, and the joint sand follows.
Salt air and summer rain make it worse. A tight polymeric joint against hot masonry cooks, then washes out, and the edge pavers rock.
Isolation joint and hearth pad
We stop the paver field short of the firebox and set a hearth extension on its own haunch, with a soft isolation joint between masonry and pavers. The joint is a movement gap, not a grout line.
Pitch on the patio still clears the hearth so ash and rain do not pond at the glass. Gas shutoff boxes stay in a flush access lid, not under a soldier course. If the existing fireplace already has a cracked concrete hearth, we cut it back and rebuild the extension before the field is laid.
Call PaverForge Hardscapes at 727-490-9798 or use the book-online page. Send photos of the apron, the sidewalk joint, and any low spot. We typically reply the same business day and walk the lot before we lock a number. The shop is in St. Pete Beach, and the same crew covers Dunedin, Clearwater, Largo, Seminole, and St. Petersburg.
