Paver Drainage in Pinellas: Pitch, Drains, and Permeable Fields
Most failed paver jobs in St. Pete Beach and south Pinellas are water problems wearing a stone costume. The field looks fine the week it is swept. After the first wet month, joints wash, the low corner ponds, and a wheel path starts to dish. PaverForge Hardscapes designs drainage before we pick a pattern.
Pitch first
A patio or driveway needs a consistent fall away from the house, the pool, and any door threshold. On a tight beach lot that fall is often only a few inches across the whole field, so the base has to be screeded to that plane. We do not hide a low spot with extra sand.
When a drain is required
Some lots have no legal place to shed water. A courtyard, a pool deck boxed by walls, or a driveway that tilts toward the garage needs a drain line, a channel drain, or a dry well that actually percolates in sand. We call that out on the quote instead of hoping the joints will drink the storm.
Permeable pavers
Open-joint permeable systems can help on certain Pinellas lots where runoff volume is the issue and the subgrade can take water. They are not a free pass on a high water table or a lot that already floods from the street. We only specify them when the base, filter layers, and outflow make sense on that property.
Standard interlocking pavers with tight joints and a pitched base for most patios and driveways
Channel or area drains where the lot is boxed in
Permeable fields only when the soil and outflow support them
Re-level plus new pitch when an old field ponds but the stones are still good
