Paver Overlay vs Full Excavation on Pinellas Lots
Homeowners ask if we can set new pavers on top of the old field, or on top of a cracked slab, and skip the excavation. Sometimes that is the honest call. On a lot of Pinellas driveways it is a second lid on a failed base.
PaverForge Hardscapes will walk the lot and tell you which one you are looking at. Call 727-490-9798 or book a walkthrough at paverforge.com/book-online.
When an overlay can work
A stable existing slab or a sound paver field with a known, compacted base can take a thin overlay if the finished height still clears the door threshold, the garage, and the street. Drainage has to still pitch away from the house after the extra thickness.
Existing base or slab is stable, not pumping water or rocking under a car
Finished height still works at the house, the apron, and any pool beam
Water still has a legal place to go after the extra lift
The edge can be restrained at the new height
When we excavate
If the current field was set on native sand, if tire ruts are already in the base, or if the lot ponds against the slab, an overlay copies the failure one course higher. We open it, rebuild the base in lifts, and reset a field that can be repaired later.
That costs more on day one. It is cheaper than overlaying twice. We put both options in the quote when the lot actually has both options.
How to start the conversation
Call PaverForge Hardscapes at 727-490-9798 or use the book-online page. Send photos of the existing surface, the thresholds, and any ponding. We typically reply the same business day and will not lock a number until we walk the lot.
