Proof-Rolling a Pinellas Paver Base Before Bedding Sand
A Pinellas paver field fails from the bottom more often than from the color. The base looks flat. The screed rails look right. Then a loaded truck, a boat trailer, or a week of rain prints a soft spot that was never seen because nobody rolled a tire across the stone before the sand went down.
Proof-rolling is that last pass. It is not a lab density test. It is a slow roll with a loaded truck, a plate, or the job dump unit across the compacted stone so a pumping or weaving spot shows up while it is still cheap to fix.
Where Pinellas bases hide soft spots
Old planter pockets and organic soil that were not undercut to firm sand.
Trench backfill over a new water or sewer repair that was dumped, not compacted in lifts.
The downhill lake or canal edge where the water table sits closer to grade.
The garage-threshold strip where the excavator could not fit a full plate pass.
What we do when a spot weaves
We open that bay, undercut to firm material, rebuild the stone in thin lifts, and roll it again. Only then does ASTM C33 bedding sand go down. Bedding sand cannot hide a weaving base. It just moves the failure into the first rainy season.
