Recycled Crushed-Concrete Base vs Virgin Aggregate in Pinellas

Base is the job. The paver is the finish. In Pinellas you will hear lime rock, granite, and recycled crushed concrete offered as if they are interchangeable. They are not. PaverForge Hardscapes will use recycled crushed concrete when the material is clean, graded, and compactable. We will not use it as a discount filler on a wet lot.

What recycled concrete does well

Clean crushed concrete can lock up tightly and carry a driveway if it is placed in lifts and proof-rolled. It is often easier to source on a mid-county job than a decorative granite. On a dry, well-drained mainland lot it is a legitimate section, not a compromise.

Where it is the wrong call

  • Lots with standing groundwater during excavation. Fines in recycled product can hold water.

  • Material that arrives with dirt, asphalt chunks, or oversized pieces that will not compact.

  • A spec that already asked for open-graded stone because the field is a PICP or a wet swale.

  • A barrier-island lot where we already prefer a washed, predictable stone.

How we decide on your lot

We look at the excavation, not the brochure. If the hole is wet, we talk geotextile and a stone that drains. If the hole is dry and the recycled pile is clean, we compact it and proof-roll it the same way we would virgin rock. The quote names the section so you are not surprised on install day.

Ask which base your lot needs
