Septic Lids and Drain-Field Setbacks in Pinellas Paver Fields
Plenty of mid- and north-Pinellas lots still run a septic tank and a drain field under what looks like a side yard. Homeowners want that area paved for a cart path, a trash pad, or extra parking. Paving over a tank lid or compacting a drain field is how a simple patio turns into a pump-out you cannot reach.
Rules we will not skip
Tank lids stay reachable — a removable paver panel or a framed lid, not a buried cover.
Heavy equipment and deep aggregate stay off the drain field.
We locate the tank and lines before excavation, not after a bucket hits a riser.
If the only place for parking sits on the field, we say no and offer a different pad location.
What a legal-feeling patio still looks like
Most jobs keep the drain field in turf or gravel and put the paver work on the tank-free side of the house. Where a walk has to cross a lid, we build a marked, liftable panel so the next service tech does not have to demo your field. That is slower than a continuous herringbone — and it is the only version that does not create a future tear-out.
