Setting a Heat-Pump Water-Heater Condensate and Overflow Pad
Heat-pump water heaters dump condensate all day in Pinellas humidity, and the overflow pan dumps a lot more if the drain clogs. A hose laid across the driveway stains joints and keeps the soldier course wet against the slab. PaverForge Hardscapes sets a small isolated pad so that water has a home that is not your paver field.
What the pad has to do
The pad is not a patio. It is a short, slightly dished field with a lip, pitched to a pop-up or to daylight, isolated from the house slab and from the driveway. We leave a sleeve for the condensate line and a second sleeve for the pan overflow so a future swap does not mean cutting the field again.
If the unit sits in a garage side yard, we keep the pad off the AC pad and off any gas-meter setback. A bond-breaker at the slab keeps the little field from telegraphing house movement into the first driveway course.
Why the driveway is the wrong drain
Polymeric sand does not like a daily drip. The wet joint grows algae, then the sand washes, then the edge course rocks. Routing condensate onto a dedicated pad with a splash lip is cheaper than re-sanding the whole drive every spring.
PaverForge Hardscapes builds these pads across Pinellas from St. Pete Beach. Call 727-490-9798 with a photo of the heater, the current hose run, and the nearest low corner.
