Setting Rain-Barrel and Cistern Splash Pads in Pinellas
A rain barrel or small cistern that dumps onto soil next to a Pinellas slab will carve a hole, saturate the first course of a walk, and feed termites and mosquitoes. The hardscape fix is a small splash pad with a defined overflow path.
Pitch, setback, and overflow
We set the pad high enough that the barrel sits level, then pitch overflow away from the foundation toward a bed, dry well, or existing downspout tie-in. A trapped or open drain is optional; most residential barrels only need a short paver field and a soldier edge that will not kick out when the barrel is full.
Where two barrels share a downspout, the pad is sized for both plus the first-flush diverter so hoses are not draped across the walk.
What we avoid
We do not butt the pad to stucco without a gap. We do not let overflow run under a polymeric joint. And we do not hide the spigot behind a wall a homeowner cannot reach with a watering can.
