Sun-Shelf and Baja-Shelf Paver Decks on Pinellas Pools
Sun shelves and baja shelves are the most used two feet of a Pinellas pool. Kids sit there. Coolers sit there. Salt cells and heaters dump warm water across them. A driveway paver with a wide joint and a glossy sealer is the wrong product.
We treat the shelf as a pool deck, not a patio leftover. That means a slip-resistant texture, a tight joint, an isolation joint at the beam, and a pitch that carries splash to a drain instead of back into the waterline tile.
Build details that keep the shelf serviceable
Porcelain or a shot-blast concrete paver rated for wet feet, not a polished cobble.
A bond-breaker at the pool beam so the deck can move without cracking the coping.
Heel-proof slot or trench drains at the slider if the shelf dumps toward the house.
Joints that can be re-sanded after a storm without grinding a sealed film off the face.
Heat and color on a west-facing shelf
A dark charcoal shelf on a west Pinellas pool is a burn risk at 4 p.m. We mock up two colors on the actual beam and walk them at solar noon. Cool-color and high-albedo fields exist for a reason here.
If the existing shelf is mortar-set tile that is hollow, we do not overlay pavers on the failed mud bed. We pull it, check the beam, and rebuild. An overlay on a hollow shelf is a one-summer repair.
Plan the shelf with the cage and the coping
Screen posts, kick plates, and coping bullnoses all land on this plane. We layout those collisions before the first cut. Call 727-490-9798 to walk a Pinellas sun-shelf rebuild.
