Thermal Expansion on South-Facing Pinellas Pool Decks

A south-facing Pinellas pool deck can run far hotter than the shaded side of the same house. Concrete pavers expand. If the field is locked tight against the pool beam, the screen-enclosure posts, and the house slab, that movement has to go somewhere — usually into a popped coping, a racked door track, or a mid-field hump.

Where we put the relief

We keep a clean isolation joint at the pool beam and at the house, break long runs with a control band, and do not mortar-lock a sand-set field to a rigid cage footer. On large decks we plan soldier-course bands so a future reset is a strip, not a tear-out.

Color and heat

Darker fields feel hotter underfoot and move a little more. That is a design choice, not a defect. We talk through color, shade structures, and a light-colored border at the waterline so the deck stays usable in August.

If your south Pinellas pool deck is shoving the beam or lipping at the sliders, PaverForge Hardscapes can re-detail the field. Call 727-490-9798.
